These instructions show you how to send an encrypted e-mail from with the Office 365 Outlook web app.

Choose your version for instructions

The instructions are slightly different depending on whether you're using the new Outlook on the web. Choose which version of Outlook on the web you're using to see the instructions that apply to you.

Instructions for Classic Outlook on the Web

Log into Office 365 and open the Outlook mail app

Click on New to begin composing a new e-mail.

Click on the Protect button

By default, Do Not Forward protection will be applied. This means that the message will be encrypted and recipients won't be able to forward the e-mail, print or copy content.

You will see a small message informing you of the protection that has been applied, as well as a padlock icon in the subject line.

If you want to change the type of protection applied, click Change Permissions.

If you want to remove protection, click Remove

If you click Change Permissions, you will be able to choose from 4 default protection templates to apply to your e-mail.

Encrypt - this will only encrypt the e-mail. Recipients will then be able to do whatever they want with the received message and content.

Do Not Forward - the default protection as already described.

School Name - Confidential or Confidential \ All Employees  - grants read and modify permissions for the protected content. E-mail and content cannot be sent outside of the organisation (to an external e-mail address)

School Name - Confidential View Only or Highly Confidential \ All Employees - grants read-only permission for the protected content. E-mail and content cannot be sent outside of the organisation (to an external e-mail address)

Click OK Once you have selected your desired level of protection. outlook web classic protect permissions ok

Complete your e-mail as normal, attaching any documents if required.

Click Send.

The e-mail will then be sent with the level of protection that you selected.

Instructions for the new Outlook on the Web
